Hey man, nice chilli hat!

English is not the national language in Thailand, but in the areas that are visited by tourists, many of the signs, menu's, leaflets, tuk-tuk decorations, etc, are in English, and the translations are sometimes pretty amusing.

Tonight I went out for dinner very late, and ended up at a decent looking hawker stand. I was unable to conceal my amusement when I read "Stir Fry Regetables", "Chilli Hat" and "Chilli Hat with Regies" on the menu. Now, "Stiry Fry Regetables, although funny, is only one letter away from "Stir Fry Vegetables", but what the hell is "Chilli Hat" supposed to be? I considered ordering it (Garcon! Bring me a chilli hat!!) but thought that might be dangerous, so I asked for some stir fried chicken and basil.

I think the kid who takes the orders there might have been offended by my laughing at his menu, cause when he relayed my order to the cook, I think I detected a strong note of sarcasm when he said gai (chicken). When my food turned up, there was brown meat in there that was definitley not chicken. It was at best pork, and at worst cat.

The bottle of sprite was nice.
